Thanksgiving Day: In 1939 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt moved the day to the third Thursday in November to stimulate business activity by separating it more widely from Christmas. In 1941 he moved it forward again to the last Thursday and conceded that there had been no rise in holiday buying. (An Encyclopedic Dictionary of American History, Howard L. Hurwitz).
