prima:SMEs in Puerto Rico could be taxed on nonexistent inventory if a freeze is approved

The measure amending Puerto Rico’s Municipal Code will be discussed again in the House of Representatives next Monday, August 18

August 4, 2025 - 12:09 PM

If approved, an increase in CRIM collections of approximately $6.5 million during fiscal year 2025 is estimated for the inventory tax, according to the project cost report. (Ramon Tonito Zayas)

The proposed freeze on inventory tax for the 2025 to 2027 tax years has the business community on alert, as the measure would not represent a “lifeline” for many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which would likely pay the same amount as in 2022, 2023, and 2024, even though their product balance would likely be lower than that reported in those periods.
