The federal Supreme Court ratified the decision by the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico, where it was determined that the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico does not have original sovereignty to invoke the exception to the double jeopardy clause. (Suministrada)

Like an earthquake, whose aftershocks are felt long after the main event is finished, the decision made by the Supreme Court of the United States establishing that the island has no self-government to press charges against defendants previously convicted in federal court will have echoes within the nation's legal and political spheres.
