Three of the main pumps of the Carraízo dam system are out of service after a power outage on Thursday night, the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (Prasa) said.
In a press release published on social media, the public corporation indicated that thousands of subscribers are affected by the situation, since the pumps’ output has caused interruptions in the delivery of raw water to the Sergio Cuevas Filtration Plant.
José A. Rivera Ortiz, executive director of Prasa’s Metro Region, said the outage knocked out two of the five pumps that were in operation at the time of the event. A third pump was already out of operation prior to the outage.
The corporation said that the situation reduces the water distribution capacity of the network, so it is working on the implementation of operational adjustments to guarantee drinking water service to as many subscribers as possible.
“We are aware of the impact this situation may have on our subscribers and we understand the inconvenience caused by not having an essential service. Since the outage occurred, we have mobilized our technical and operational personnel to address it as quickly as possible. Our commitment is to restore the system’s operation in a safe manner and continue providing service to the public," said Rivera Ortiz.
So far, residents of the communities of Saint Just, Santurce, San Antón, San Mateo, Miramar, Carraízo, Cupey, Fair View, Sabana Llana Sur, Piñones, Villa Mar, Condado, Ocean Park, Urb. Country Club, Urb. Villa Fontana, Urb. Villa Carolina and surrounding areas could be affected by low pressure and intermittent service.
Prasa called on the citizens who use this system to use water wisely and responsibly.
Prasa is in constant communication with mayors and public officials of the affected areas to carry out water supply initiatives.
