The Puerto Rico Department of Health’s latest STI surveillance report, published on June 19, states that between January 1 and March 31, 2026, there were 250 reported cases of syphilis, 225 cases of gonorrhea, 611 cases of chlamydia, and 1,018 cases of genital herpes. (Shutterstock)

During the first three months of 2026, people between the ages of 20 and 34 accounted for the majority of reported cases of syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia in Puerto Rico. The trend has prompted experts to call for comprehensive sex education and expanded access to prevention tools for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
