prima:Conservation in action: thousands of concho toad tadpoles released in northern Puerto Rico

The initiative seeks to recover the natural populations of this endemic amphibian, threatened by habitat destruction and invasive species

May 26, 2026 - 4:32 PM

Releases are normally made in May, June and October, coinciding with the rainy seasons and the natural reproductive cycles of the concho toad. (Pablo Martínez Rodríguez)

From zoos in San Diego, California, and Brooklyn, New York, divided into seven bags, thousands of sapo concho tadpoles were transported by air to their country of origin: Puerto Rico. Once in San Juan, their journey -by land- continued through several towns until, 15 hours after the journey began, they were released in their new home: the forests of the northern karst.
