The most recent case of forced labor, reported in the Municipality of Carolina, brought to light a social phenomenon that has been under investigation for decades in Puerto Rico and that, according to experts in human trafficking and vulnerable populations consulted by El Nuevo Día, reveals the urgency of performing a “community analysis” on how neighbors, local authorities and relatives ignored supposed signs of physical and emotional violence towards a young girl with intellectual disability over the past few years.
