In addition to the updated list of priority species, the extensive document outlines known and worsening threats to wildlife—a group of non-domesticated living organisms that inhabit natural environments—such as habitat loss and climate change. It also acknowledges the limitations imposed by receiving less federal funding than U.S. states for conservation efforts. (Isabel Ferré Sadurní Photography)

From marine mammals to amphibians and saltwater fish, 81 species were added to the list of those in greatest need of conservation in the new draft of the Puerto Rico State Wildlife Action Plan (PRSWAP) by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA), a document that, according to environmental advocates, contains gaps that prevent it from fulfilling its goal of protecting wildlife across the archipelago.
