prima:Power demand rises as questions persist over Puerto Rico grid ahead of peak summer season

The ability to avoid outages now depends essentially on the same generation sources as a year ago, while LUMA Energy bets on transmission line improvements

Over the coming months, rising temperatures — and therefore increased electricity demand — will also place greater stress on the transmission and distribution lines operated by LUMA Energy. (Carlos Rivera Giusti)

In a year that is already showing higher levels of electricity consumption than in 2025, Puerto Rico is approaching the peak demand season without certainty as to when additional generation resources will become available. This places even greater pressure on the aging power plants operated by Genera PR to avoid events like the one that occurred last Monday at the Costa Sur plant, where the shutdown of Unit #6 left nearly 150,000 customers without service.
