The extreme drought affecting 44.45% of the territory is taking a toll on the Southern Aquifer, and the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA), which administers and issues permits for drilling wells in the region, warned that if water levels continue to decline, it would order some well permits to be shut down to preserve the supply of drinking water.
