Scientists and fishermen are leading a proposal to establish a shark sanctuary in the Boca Vieja area of Cataño. The site is a reef near the local fishing village where scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini), an endangered species, use the area as a nursery. To help prevent their decline, the group is calling for a ban on shark fishing within the nursery grounds.
