With the exception of renewable energy farms developed in the early 2010s and the influx of solar power generated by 200,000 net-metering customers, Puerto Rico essentially has the same energy mix today that it had 25 years ago, when private cogeneration plants EcoEléctrica and AES came online. With an aging generation fleet that remains heavily dependent on petroleum-based fuels, years of promises for a more reliable, cleaner and more affordable power system have remained far from reality.
