Authorities rescued two women who were swept away by currents on a beach near the La Concha hotel in Condado, and are working to locate a third turist.

San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero said in a written statement that personnel from the Municipal Office for Emergency Management (OMME), along with Municipal Police, Puerto Rico Police and the Coast Guard, are conducting an extensive search for the missing tourist.

Romero explained that the three people were visiting the island. Earlier, the municipal police said the three people were tourists from New York.

“We recognize the work of the Emergency Management personnel, who have assumed the coordination of this operation with the commitment and urgency that a situation like this requires. From the Municipality we have immediately integrated all our available resources to support these efforts and continue the search without rest,” said Romero in the letter.

The official said the incident was reported on Wednesday afternoon, and that maritime units from the United Rapid Action Forces, a Coast Guard helicopter and vessels and OMME drones are assisting in the search efforts.

The mayor noted that they used the Dolphin 3 rescue device from OceanAlpha to extract the two women from the water. The device is a remotely operated motorized buoy.

“This type of incident requires an immediate, coordinated response with all available resources. From the first moment we activated our land, maritime and air units, integrating technology such as drones and specialized equipment to expand the search area. We will not stop these efforts until we exhaust all alternatives to find the whereabouts of this young man,” added Carlos Acevedo, director of the San Juan OMME.
